Ride: 59km; total: 282km
Walk G: 5km; total: 102km
Walk W: 7km; total: 98km
We were on the road just before 8:30am, still heading West. We followed the EV6 (in Slovakia) until Medveďov, then crossed the river into Hungary and set off for Gyor. For once we had a nice tail wind. There were a few bridges to cross to get through the border area and when we arrived back in Hungary we quickly realised we were on the main highway with vehicles doing in excess of 100km/h. Not nice, so we back tracked and took a traffic-free route instead. While the path was a mix of smooth sealed, rough sealed, gravel, and a little muddy in places, in was a lot more pleasant than riding on that road. The sign said 27km into Gyor, but when we put our hotel in Google Maps, it said 15km - bonus! We arrived at the hotel about an hour before scheduled check in time but the room was ready, another bonus.
The ride on the Slovakian side of the Danube was the same scenery as yesterday - river on one side, and farmland on the other, so we didn’t stop for too many photos. Mornos was had sitting under a shelter adjacent a water treatment plant near Malé Kosihy, where the flies were very friendly, so we didn’t linger too long. Lunch was eaten under a shelter adjacent the village of Medveďov, near a pub. We had fun watching all manner of individuals ride in on bikes, motorbikes, and scooters, have a ‘drink’ and ride away again. Just above the shelter was a stork’s nest with a chick and an appropriate adult. Nice to see they haven’t shooed them away.
It was a relief to finally reach the hotel, as it is our fifth day of riding and our legs and bottoms were feeling it a little. Thankfully, our room is on the ground floor so we didn’t have to lug our gear up the stairs (no elevator). We unpacked, had a wash and had a little rest before setting out on foot to explore. Could have done with two nights here, well we could have done with two nights in all of our stops, but we would never be able to cover the distance we want to in just three months. There is a picture around every corner. 5km later we were back in our room, catching our breaths, doing a bit of blogging before consuming our takeaway dinners.
Wendy found it easier to take a screen shot of Google Maps to identify all the different buildings we are seeing.
Our hotel - Nest
Our room - #104, on the ground floor overlooking the street with see through curtains! We eventually found the buttons for the electric external blinds, another bonus - 3 in one day!
City Hall
The first time we’ve seen solar panels on the side of a building - jolly good idea
Carmelite Church
Basilica of Gyor, ordinary on the outside, extraordinary on the inside
Gyor Theological College
Benedictine Monastery
