14-22 deg C, another beautiful day, with a very cool and lazy breeze later in the day
Walk G: 12km; total: 418km
Walk W: 9km; total: 373km
We had a proper sleep-in this morning; neither of us was awake until almost 7am, so breakfast was a little later. We keep finding ‘new’ stuff at the breakfast bar, so breakfast is never boring. Greg has taken a shine to their hot porridge.
We set off exploring about 9:30am after doing some more route planning. For Wendy, the most interesting was the Elbe tunnel and the most disappointing the Beatles Platz and cut-outs. They are in a part of town that is not the most salubrious and had some less fortunate folk loitering nearby, making photography a tad difficult. This part of town is called St Pauli, and we couldn’t help thinking it may have been named after Paul McCartney. They first visited in 1960, when they were a band of five. But it’s named after Saint Paul, the Christian Apostle.
The Bismarck monument is a large stone structure commemorating the life of Otto von Bismarck, a German statesman and diplomat who oversaw the unification of Germany under Prussian control. Unfortunately, some idiots have decided to adorn the monument with their graffiti. We are against graffiti, except maybe when it’s “art” and in designated places. At least on the Bismarck monument it does give an otherwise dull structure a bit of colour. The govt even held a competition some years back trying to find ideas how to liven it up a bit. They failed to find a solution.
After dinner, Greg went out for a longer than usual wander. He came across a busking duo on the waterfront who were pretty good so he sat down and watched them for a while.
