Day 39: Sat 26 Jul - Torgau to Wittenberg, 72km

17-23 deg C, early clouds clearing to sunny, then cloudy again, that sneaky headwind was there again, and it was quite fresh
Ride: 72km; total time: 5h42
Ride total G: 1,172km
Ride total W: 1,156km
Walk G: 6km; total: 308km
Walk W: 3km; total: 275km

After a pretty decent breakfast, we were packed up and on the bikes by about 8:30am. Straight onto the EV7/Elbe route about 200m down the hill. Today’s ride was very interesting with different kinds of paths and different countryside. We rode through many wheat, corn and sugar beet fields as well as small paddocks filled with either sheep, goats, cattle, or horses. One of the herds of goats was all male, and they were very well endowed, obviously a stud farm. There were also a few really nice looking horse stables, an indication that this region has a great equestrian tradition.

We stopped for mornos at Dommitzsch, a sticky beak at Pretzsch, and lunch beside the path near Klöden. We were checked-in and in our room #15 just before 2:30pm despite it being a 3pm check-in. We ventured out again just after 4pm to have a look and get dinner. Wittenberg turned out to be a superb little town. It’s an historical renowned for its pivotal role in the Protestant Reformation. Officially named Lutherstadt Wittenberg it is deeply associated with Martin Luther, whose writings and actions from here sparked a religious and cultural transformation. There are two UNESCO World Heritage sites here.

We hit the 1,000km mark on Thursday, after approximately four weeks of riding.
