Day 26: Sun 13 Jul - Linz

13-29 deg C, a beautiful sunny day
Walk G: 10km; total: 205km
Walk W: 12km; total: 200km

We wanted to visit the Mariendom, Austria’s biggest church, today but had to wait until morning services were over. So, after an early mornos in the room, we set off to wander. We eventually made it to the Dom, and while Wendy returned to the hotel, Greg stayed on for the service. Although he didn’t understand one word of the language he could grasp what was happening. As he’s not a RC he wasn’t able to partake of holy communion. For its size, the church is quite understated, which is refreshing for a change. Of course, the led-lightning was amazingly beautiful.

Wendy had an early lunch on her way back to the hotel and saw they have beer on the drinks menu. She was tempted because, when in Austria, one must do as the Austrians do and have beer with your Maccas for lunch. Wendy didn’t yield to temptation though. Back at the hotel we both had a longer than usual afternoon rest - the toll of the last three riding days has caught up with us.

We hit the streets a little refreshed and wandered to the main train station just to have a look as most of them are pretty speccy. Linz Hauptbahnhof is another understated facility. Inside it was clean, almost sterile, and with a sign in it as per the pic below, we understand why. This station is described as “trains guarded by lions that don’t bite.”

The Botanical Gardens were next, and where else, but on a hill. As with all gardens in the early days of summer, they needed a bit of care and attention, so we didn’t linger for too long. Back down the hill, to an Asian restaurant Greg spied yesterday. Bellies full, we wandered for a bit before retiring to our room for the night.

Austria’s largest church with a rather tall steeple. Although it was completed in 1924, it is still called  ‘New Cathedral’

This organ was one of the two played during the service and it was powerful

The largest of the two organs, while it is being played some of the pipes are open

The church forecourt hosted a classical music concert last night - Greg listened to some of it from behind the barricades during his wander
