Day 49: Tue 5 Aug - Berlin to Rathenow, 90km

End of week 7!

18-22 deg C, miserable and wet until about 2pm when it fined up
Ride: 90km; total time: 6h41
Ride total G: 1,414km
Ride total W: 1,382km
Walk G: 3km; total: 388km
Walk W: 2km; total: 348km

We had breakfast earlier than usual simply because we knew we had a long day in the saddle. Of the 6h41 of the total time between Berlin and Rathenow,  we were moving for 5h06, and it wasn’t all easy. Getting out of Berlin took a little over 1.5 hr! It is such a big sprawling city, but with excellent bike paths. We stopped for mornos on a bench seat outside a shopping centre near Falkansee. After drinking our brews-to-go we hung around for a bit longer to wait for the rain to stop. This was our second encounter of rain today as we had taken shelter earlier in the ride also. Although 90km isn’t a huge ride by our touring standards, this one took it out of us a bit. A few factors were in play, the rain tends to make any ride tougher, the hills - although they weren’t steep there were plenty of them and they were long, the headwind - again not that strong but it was there all day and last but not least, the navigation - there was no easily recognisable route, so we had to navigate at every turn and there were often a number of different options. That is all very interesting, but the only thing that really matters is that we both arrived at the destination safe and well.

Lunch was had on the steps of the Rathaus at Nauen. Again, it started raining just as we pulled up so had a longer lunch than anticipated. We didn’t stop again until we reached our hotel at Rathenow - Hotel Fürstenhof, a lovely old building. We are in room 405 and it is rather large, but a lot of wasted space. No aircon, but it is fairly quiet, although you can hear the trains passing about 200m away. Hopefully there won’t be any after 10pm.

Dinner was had at Himalaya Pizza, just across the road. Greg read the reviews and said it was good, and it was. After 90km, we both wanted a hit of carbs, so we had a pizza each - prawn for Greg and, wait for it, Hawaiian for Wendy. Greg then went for a wander into the city centre while Wendy nursed a sore knee and blogged.
