18-36 deg C, was certainly quite warm riding back from the castle
Ride: 61km; total: 429km
Walk G: 5km; total: 130km
Walk W: 5km; total: 130km
After two days without any riding Greg was getting bike-separation-anxiety, so following a very hearty. breakfast, we donned the Lycra and headed off on the bikes to see Devin Castle. We estimated that it was about 10km away. We also knew it was closed. The ride was also a route recce for tomorrow when we leave Bratislava for Vienna. We photographed the castle from the bottom of the hill, then decided we should see if we can catch the ferry across the Danube and ride from the Austrian side. Days and times were not in our favour. Upon consulting the Euro Velo app and the available signage, both told us there is a bridge about 4km in a northerly direction on the EV13. Off we went and found the bridge. It turned out to be one of the best cycling/walking bridges we’ve ever ridden on. Amazing that such infrastructure exists in Europe when we can’t even get a path down the side of the Torbanlea-Burrum Heads road! We then just followed the signs all the way back to the city, over a rail bridge with walking and cycling lanes on either side. Wendy doesn’t think the 61km would have been as enjoyable on a manual bike, while Greg just likes to ride, regardless.
We were happy to be home as we were out of water and it was starting to get a tad warm - it’s a dry heat so sucks all the moisture out of you. We put the aircon on, had a wash then lunch. Bike batteries were plugged in for a recharge ready for our 67 odd km tomorrow, while humans rested.
In the late afternoon we walked to the Church of St Elizabeth, aka The Blue Church. A lovely old church. We arrived just as the bells were tolling. Would have loved to look inside, but like many other churches in Slovakia it was closed for renovations.
We feel we have given Bratislava our best shot and now are ready to move on tomorrow. Austria here we come.
Devin Castle
A Viking river cruise boat, sometimes we think we could be sitting back on the deck one one of these drinking champagne, but then again nup!
Schloss Hof in the distance, Austria
Mornos stop near Schloss Hof
If you get lost on this route, you’re obviously not looking
A smooth path between the fields, was very glary though
A purpose built cycle/pedestrian bridge
Nice shady path was a welcome relief
Route from hotel to Devin Castle, 14.79km. We thought we could catch the ferry to the other said of the river and ride from there. It was not to be.
Route from Devin Castle back to hotel, 46.45km
Church of St Elizabeth
