It doesn’t get much better than today as far as cycle touring goes; clear blue skies, a tailwind for most of the day, perfect temperature, friendly locals, fairly flat, a couple of beautiful churches which were open, great countryside scenery and of course excellent company. The 75km was over well before we wanted it to be.
The whole area between Vechta and Osnabrück is either forest or farmland, with a few villages thrown in. The soil looks rich and the current crops are very lush and healthy. Considering that the summer wheat harvest has only been finalised recently they have already got their winter wheat crop popping its head out of the ground. Most of the sugar beet and maize crops are pretty close to harvest now too. Saw our first goose farm today with thousands of them wandering around the paddocks. Germany has a Culinary Tradition with geese. The "Weihnachtsgans" (Christmas goose) is a significant part of German culinary tradition, with millions of geese consumed between St. Martin's Day and Christmas Day. They also use the feathers and down for insulation in bedding and clothing.
Another first on this tour was the sight of three emus in a small paddock with a couple of lamas for company. We often see emus in Europe during our bicycle tours.
Once we had unpacked and settled in we went off on foot to see what would take our fancy for dinner. Settled on a little Asian restaurant and it certainly hit the spot. A short wander to the info centre for a town map and then we headed home.
A very pleasant day on tour.
