Day 73: Fri 29 Aug - Duisburg (Germany) to Nijmegen (Netherlands), 98km

13-22 deg C, fine with some lovely sunny periods, great tailwind for the majority of the ride, just occasionally it would turn into a nasty headwind
Moving time: 5h21m
Elapsed time: 6h58m
Total ride G: 2,287km
Total ride W: 2,219km
Walk G: 6km; total: 566km
Walk W: 4km; total:479km

We have finally made it into our sixth country, Netherlands.

We were held up for a little while this morning by the lack of lifts at the hotel. They only have the one quite small lift and at that time of the morning, people are coming and going from breakfast, and also trying to get to reception to check out. Anyway, we eventually got away just before 9am.

It wasn’t long before we were on the EV3 (Pilgrims route)  and EV15 (Rhine route). We had ridden beside the mighty Rhine on tour many times before and it was like meeting an old friend again. Not a great deal to stop for today, but it’s marvelous how many photos we ended up with by the end of the ride. Mornos was at Rheinberg, a lovely clean and tidy little place. Lunch was overlooking the water at Xanten/Luttingen, and we stopped for an afternoon refreshment at Kalkar. From there it was only 30km to our hotel, so we didn’t stop again. Upon entering the Netherlands, the first thing you notice is the number of people on bicycles and the staggering number of bikes there are parked everywhere.

We arrived about 3:45pm and after securing the bikes in the shed out the back, we settled into our room. Very similar to the previous hotel at Duisburg.  Not a huge room but the beds are good, the aircon works, and we have a fridge that is cold.

After cleaning ourselves up a bit we went for a walk to get dinner and have a quick look around. Greg went for a post dinner walk and got caught in a shower of rain. Wendy blogged.
